Focus on Retention as well as Recruitment

Each year contractors experience turnover. Some established workers leave for new opportunities while others are laid off until projects start back up. The construction industry saw 150,000 workers quit in December 2023, while layoffs totaled 169,000. Once demand increases, contractors will seek to replace the workers they’ve lost.

How to Avoid a Bad Termination

No one wants to start off the new year with an employee termination, and while it’s not as common as a voluntary quit, it does happen. In October 2023, 1.6 million employees were either discharged or laid off (compared to 3.6 million who quit), according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. But sometimes terminations are necessary, like when an employee isn’t a good fit and keeping him or her on would only hurt your business. A Look at 2024’s Top Construction Workforce Challenges

The US construction industry is growing, and it doesn’t look like it will slow down in the foreseeable future. A recent report shows the US construction industry is expected to steadily grow over the next four quarters and continue to do so for the next three years, reaching an output of $1,749,898.1 million by 2027. A large part of that growth could be attributed to the US government’s investment in domestic manufacturing and infrastructure from the CHIPS and Science Act and Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

But beyond blaming daylight saving time (which actually ends in the fall, so we’re now on regular time) the days simply get shorter in the fall and winter in the Northern Hemisphere thanks to the tilt of the Earth’s axis. For some, experiencing less daylight can seriously affect mental health. In fact, during fall and winter many adults experience a type of depression called seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Employers need to be aware about SAD as it can impact their workers’ productivity and general wellbeing. Even someone who showed no mental health challenges during the rest of the year can be impacted when the days during the winter months.

Keep Your 2024 Workplace Accident Free

Construction workplace accidents happen. Jobsites can be hazardous, filled with fall, trip and machinery hazards. And those hazards can lead to worker injury and, too often, deaths. According to OSHA, 4,764 workers died on the job in 2020 and nearly half of those were in construction, transportation and material moving and extraction occupations. What’s worse, many of those deaths could have been avoided by adhering to OSHA workplace guidelines, and failing to do so can not only cause harm to your workers, but financial penalties.
