Focus on Recognition for Employee Appreciation Day

Employee Appreciation Day is March 7 and it’s the perfect opportunity to recognize your employees and their efforts. Currently, it also couldn’t be more important as most contractors are struggling to fill positions.
Happy construction employees

According to AGC’s 2025 Construction Hiring and Business Outlook, nearly 80% of firms surveyed say it is difficult to find qualified hourly craft workers and 88% predict that it will remain difficult or get even harder to hire in 2025.

With recruitment being such a struggle, providing thoughtful and specific employee recognition may provide a solution. It’s been found that employee appreciation or recognition is directly tied to employee retention. A Gallup/Workhuman study shows that regular recognition has a big impact on worker happiness with 56% of respondents saying they’re less likely to look for other job opportunities and three times as likely to feel loyal to their organization. The fewer employees you have quitting, the less you’ll have to recruit during these challenging times.

When it comes to recognition, it’s not difficult to figure out a strategy that best suits your employees.

Personalizing Employee Recognition

Recognition is most effective when tailored to the individual. Employees have different preferences, and a one-size-fits-all approach may not yield the best results. Conduct surveys or have managers gather insights on what motivates team members. Some employees might value additional paid time off, while others appreciate a complimentary meal or public acknowledgment. Utilizing employee recognition platforms that offer flexible rewards—such as gift cards, experiences or charitable contributions—can also make appreciation more meaningful.

Eight Ways to Show Employee Appreciation

  1. Offer Flexible Time Off. Providing additional time off allows employees to manage work-life balance effectively. Consider early dismissal on a Friday or a late start when workloads permit. Keep in mind that currently PTO cannot replace overtime wages, but that could change under the new administration.
  2. Give Personalized Gift Cards. Whether for essentials like gas and groceries or indulgences like coffee and dining, gift cards allow employees to choose a reward that suits them best.
  3. Encourage Peer-to-Peer Recognition. Establish a system where employees can highlight coworkers’ contributions. Whether through a formal recognition program or casual team shout-outs, peer appreciation boosts morale and fosters camaraderie.
  4. Host a Team Lunch or Outing. Gather your team for a group meal or activity as a gesture of appreciation. These events not only recognize hard work but also strengthen team connections, leading to better collaboration.
  5. Support Volunteering Initiatives. Many employees value opportunities to give back. Organizing a company-wide volunteer event or offering PTO for personal volunteer efforts can boost engagement and reinforce a positive company culture.
  6. Acknowledge Birthdays. A simple birthday message via email, chat or a quick in-person greeting can make employees feel valued. While not everyone enjoys a big celebration, a small acknowledgment goes a long way.
  7. Plan a Company Appreciation Event. Whether it’s a summer gathering or a holiday celebration, hosting an event that includes all employees fosters a sense of belonging. If feasible, invite family members to further reinforce community and support.
  8. Express Gratitude Regularly. A handwritten note, a personal message or a public acknowledgment can make employees feel genuinely appreciated. These small acts of gratitude build a strong culture of recognition.

Making Recognition a Cultural Norm

Embedding appreciation in your company culture ensures employees consistently feel valued. Recognition not only enhances job satisfaction but also drives productivity and long-term retention.

Construction has long been a male-dominated industry. Men currently make up nearly 90% of all workers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Yet women are making strides. As the industry continues to struggle with filling positions, more women are being considered.
Celebrating the women working in construction is important. Recognizing the impact women make in the industry acknowledges their essential roles but also promotes the opportunities available to others.
Managing an employee workforce requires using several types of HR technology to cover processes from recruitment to retirement, and everything in between. But knowing which solutions will serve you best can be confusing. You need tools that work together - not those that require redundant manual entry. As construction HR leaders, you also need software that addresses the specific industry challenges like managing and communicating with a shrinking, mobile workforce.
