SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (Jan. 30, 2025) — Innovation and collaboration are at the heart of how construction firms can address the industry’s workforce challenges. Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America, with support from Arcoro, the leading provider of HR software for construction companies and specialty contractors, has released a new report detailing actionable solutions for firms to strengthen their talent pipeline, from attracting new workers to developing the next generation of industry leaders.

The report, “Embracing New Strategies to Build the Future Workforce,” reflects on outcomes from the 2024 National Construction Industry HR & Workforce Conference. Supported by real-world examples from organizations across the country, the report’s solutions are organized into three key categories: recruiting, retention and workforce training.

“Many construction firms already have the tools needed to implement impactful changes at their disposal — it’s just a matter of using them effectively,” said Carrie Gardenhire, Director of Association Partnerships at Arcoro. “This report offers a roadmap for companies to take that first step toward strengthening their workforce, fueled by the proven successes of their industry peers.”

“This report catalogues the many steps AGC members and chapters are taking to address construction workforce shortages across the country,” said Jeffrey Shoaf, the chief executive officer of the Associated General Contractors of America. “Instead of spending time trying to reinvent the wheel, we hope contractors will adopt many of the proven workforce programs listed in this report.”

Recruitment strategies discussed in the report include:

  • Building successful pre-apprenticeship programs and recruiting students
  • Finding ways to market the trades to a new and younger workforce
  • Recruiting and training a non-traditional workforce

The report addresses retention strategies, such as:

  • Supporting and nurturing workers through sponsorship as opposed to mentorship
  • Creating a more welcoming and inclusive work environment
  • Getting compensation right
  • Addressing mental health and suicide prevention

Finally, the report focuses on how training strategies can leverage technology to improve career paths, including:

  • Training field people to be better leaders
  • Investing in training and employee development programs
  • Reimagining construction training
